Antonia: Behind the Myth of Marie Antoinette
Experience an unforgettable evening of music and theatre – Antonia celebrates the untold story of Marie Antoinette.
Known for her iconic fashion, extravagant spending and tragic end at the guillotine, Marie Antoinette’s pivotal role in a very different revolution – that of opera in the late 18th century – is rarely discussed. Antonia uncovers the comical, scandalous, and heartbreaking lesser-known events of her life through an original script by Olivia Doutney and the music of the composers in her world – Gluck, Piccinni, Sacchini, Dussek and Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges.
Part opera, part play, this production by Liberata Collective brings the audience into an intimate salon-style atmosphere, with Doutney as Marie Antoinette addressing the audience directly and Petra Hajduchová at the harpsichord weaving in and out of character as the composers – Marie Antoinette as you’ve never seen or heard her before.
