Home-Ed Day


Explore the historic Kitchen Garden at Chiswick House & Gardens at a special home education day for children aged 4-11.

Activities are designed to be done as a family or in groups. Older siblings are welcome to join in with our family activities, and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Day schedule

  • 10:30am-11am: Arrival and welcome in the Clore Learning Studio
  • 11am-12:30pm: Drop-in activities exploring the Kitchen Garden, or join one of our Tour & Tasting Activities (limited availability)
  • 12:30-1:30pm: Lunch break
  • 1:30-3pm: Drop-in activities exploring the Kitchen Garden, or sign up for one of our art classes
  • 3-3:30pm: End of day wrap-up and thank yous

Morning activities (11am-12:30pm)

  • Busy Bees Trail & Handling Activity: Explore the habitats and designed gardens that support our favourite pollinators and garden superheroes.
  • From Seed to Spoon Garden Plates Activity: Create your own recipes from what’s growing in the Kitchen Garden, and put together a recipe book of family favourite meals and your very own dishes.
  • Paper Pot Making & Gardening Activities: Make your own paper pots to take home, and get stuck into hands-on gardening to help care for the planting in the Learning Yard.
  • Plant Detectives: Explore the Kitchen Garden as little scientists and build your own super plant!
  • How to Become a Gardener! (11:30am-12pm): Drop in for a casual chat with our Gardens team about how to get into gardening as a career, in a session tailored for young learners and older siblings.

Afternoon activities (1:30-3pm)

  • Look Like an Artist: Get inspired by our studio artists and explore the Kitchen Garden through collaborative creative activities.
  • Wider Gardens Trail & Radio Play: Explore the wider gardens at Chiswick House & Gardens and learn about the history of the spaces and the people who lived here across the decades. A podcast version of the trail can be scanned and listened to via QR codes at each trail location.

  • 1:30-2:15pm, Slot 1 (15 children)
  • 2:15-3pm, Slot 2 (15 children)

Facilities

The Learning Hub has individual single-stall bathrooms and one accessible bathroom with baby changing facilities. Bag storage and buggy parking will be provided on site, and tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for attending adults. A breakout space will be available for anyone who would like a quiet space.

Lunch

The Café will be open for you to buy your own lunch or refreshments. If you’re bringing your own food on site, please avoid common allergens (nuts, sesame, shellfish and fish) for the safety of everyone attending.

Finding us and parking

We’re well served by public transport, with Chiswick Station, Turnham Green Station and bus routes 190, E3 and 290 all within walking distance. There’s a limited number of parking spaces on site, and public parking can be paid for at the park entrance.
