Facilitated Sessions – From Seed to Spoon: How Plants Become Food

At our facilitated school visits, children can explore the productive Kitchen Garden to learn how plants go from ‘seed to spoon’, following the journey our veggies take from the soil to the dinner table. Led by our experienced and engaging workshop facilitators, the sessions will equip students with better food and plant knowledge and an improved understanding of cooking and nutrition.

Students will also have the opportunity to taste a variety the fresh produce which we grow on site. They’ll smell the herbs used to makes teas and will take part in a guided cooking activity, making their own fruit cordial or tea to enjoy at the end of their visit, guided by seasons.

From Seed to Spoon Activity Schedule:

In these sessions, students will be introduced to the concept of a Kitchen Garden, its history here at Chiswick House & Gardens and how it continues to be used today.

  • Exploring The Anatomy of Plants & The Plant Lifecycle

Students will follow the journey of a seed as it grows. They’ll explore the different parts of plants, learn about their lifecycle and also learn about the importance of the water cycle.

  • Kitchen Garden Tour & Tasting

The group will explore the Kitchen Garden, including the Flower Quarter, Vegetable Quarter, Mushroom Logs & Fungi, Insect Habitats, The Mulberry Tree, The Fruit Cage, Herb Garden.

  • Kitchen Garden Chef Scavenger Hunt

Then, your students will go on a scavenger hunt to identify ingredients to make their own Kitchen Garden pizza, soup or salad. They’ll be challenged to find a variety of ingredients, choosing which fruits and veg will taste good together, and identifying what looks fresh.

  • Facilitated Cooking Activity

Lastly students are supported in making their own garden tea or cordial using fresh herbs and soft fruits from the Kitchen Garden. Using ingredients handpicked for your sessions by your facilitator, your learners will be instructed on how to safely use a mortar and pestle. Students will explore the taste difference of the fruits and herbs by gently crushing the herbs and soft fruits to releases their natural flavours and makes the tea or cordial drink tastier and more fragrant.

No two sessions in the Kitchen Garden are the same, with the learning opportunities and tasting changing throughout the seasons. Our facilitated session runs no matter the weather, rain or shine.
