Music and Poetry from the Burlingtons’ Chiswick

Join us for an evening of words and music inspired by the history and people of Chiswick House & Gardens.

Violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved is joined by speaker Malene Sheppard Skærved, flautist Anna Wolstenholme and the Kreutzer Quartet for a programme that moves between the 18th century and today.

You’ll hear music written for the Burlingtons by Geminiani, who was a regular guest at the house, alongside Rousseau’s Consolations (he lived on Chiswick Church Street in 1766) and Haydn’s “Lark” Quartet, from the composer who visited in 1792 and wrote about the house in his diary. Alongside them are brand new works responding to the architecture and ideas of this remarkable place, including a world premiere written for Chiswick House by David Hackbridge Johnson and Sadie Harrison’s A House of Countless Rooms. Poetry from Pope and a new piece by Malene Sheppard Skærved bring the Burlingtons’ world to life in words.

The evening also features an extraordinary 18th century violin, made for this very space and carved by John Boson, who was responsible for much of the decoration of Chiswick House.
