We’re joining over 100 gardens for London Open Gardens weekend

Behind the scenes access to our 17th century Kitchen Garden and glasshouse on Sunday 11 June as part of London Open Gardens weekend.

London Open Gardens is a major annual celebration of London’s hidden green spaces. Involving 117 gardens across the capital, the weekend event generates the vital funds for London Parks & Gardens, a small charity with a big mission to champion London’s historic parks, gardens, squares and green spaces for the benefit of everyone. The London Open Gardens weekend will run 10-11 June this year. See the full list of gardens taking part.

We’re the only participating garden from the London Borough of Hounslow. On Sunday 11 June, London Open Gardens ticketholders will be able to access a tour of the walled Kitchen Garden by our gardeners, make your own herbal tea infusion, sample freshly picked salads and meet local community groups who regularly use this precious space. Fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers picked from the Kitchen Garden that morning will be available for sale.

Building on its 350-year history, the walled Kitchen Garden is a thriving, productive space within the 65-acre Chiswick Gardens. A walled haven, it is a space for visitors to find peace and inspiration, experience seasonal produce growing and see gardeners at work. Over 200 types of fruit, vegetables and cut flowers are grown, with half of every harvest donated to local food charities.

Rosie Fyles, Head of Gardens at Chiswick House & Gardens Trust, said:

Many people never come across our Kitchen Garden when they visit the 18th and 19th century Gardens yet it’s our most productive, intensely cultivated space and a beautiful, historic walled garden. For London Open Gardens, we’re showing off the best the Chiswick Kitchen Garden team has to offer – tastings, demonstrations, tours and a big welcome, plus a chance to look behind the scenes into our working areas too.

Nathan Oley, Chair, London Open Gardens, said:

London Parks and Gardens offer an unrivalled selection of green spaces for the public to enjoy and we are excited to welcome back Chiswick House’s exceptional Kitchen Garden for this year’s event. There are a wide range of activities taking place this year including tours led by their expert gardeners, salad tasting and specialist workshops. The generosity of the volunteers helping organise this wonderful event helps us to protect London’s great legacy of green spaces and we hope that the weekend inspires thousands to enjoy it in the future.
