Autumn fire, coming soon: Sanderson Design Group donates striking new trees to Chiswick House
Coming soon to Chiswick House and Gardens: even more beautiful trees! Keep an eye out in early November, when a number of mature trees and plants, generously donated by Sanderson Design Group, will be making their way to our gardens, just in time for autumn.
The gifted trees include red maple, scarlet hawthorn, sassafras and tupelo, known for their fiery seasonal colours, as well as some eye-catching liquidambar hedging (also known as sweet gum). We’ll be giving these trees a lasting home in the grounds, with the maple and hawthorn destined for an area alongside the cricket pitch, the tupelo heading to the lakeside walk, and the sassafras going to the edge of the western wilderness, all complementing the already-impressive beauty of the gardens at this time of year.
The new trees, all North American natives, were also specially selected for their resilience to climate change, and because of how they will increase the stature, atmosphere and imaginatively landscaped appearance of the grounds.
As regular visitors might have already noticed, across the past few months we’ve been hard at work on a new biodiversity-boosting woodland project, Letting the light in – and this thoughtful gift from our friends at Sanderson will enhance our ongoing environmental efforts, providing the gardens with more mature trees and adding to the already-impressive range of species we have on site here.
Speaking about the donation, Rosie Fyles, Head of Gardens at Chiswick House and Gardens Trust, says:
With over 1,600 trees already at home in the Chiswick House grounds, we welcome this opportunity to increase the diversity and visual variety of the gardens, adding striking red maple, scarlet hawthorn, sassafras, tupelo and more to the landscape here.
Protecting our mature trees, maximising the many benefits they bring to wildlife, is something we take immensely seriously at Chiswick House and Gardens Trust – and this thoughtful gift from Sanderson Design Group will enhance our ongoing environmental efforts, arriving as it does at a time when we’re already hard at work on a biodiversity-boosting woodland project.
We can’t wait for our autumn visitors to experience the fiery colours and splendour these new trees and hedging will add to some of their favourite walks.
We’ve been working closely with Sanderson to plan the safe transport and arrival of the trees. However, please do be aware that, from Friday November 1st, visitors may experience some noise from work parties and an increase in the number of vehicles on site as the relocation takes place. All work will be completed by Friday November 8th.
Xanthe Arvanitakis, Director at Chiswick House & Gardens Trust, says:
We’re delighted to welcome these beautiful mature trees and plants, generously donated by Sanderson Design Group, to the Chiswick House & Gardens Trust, where they will have a lasting home by the lake, cricket pavilion and in other key sites across the gardens.
As well as providing our autumn visitors with a burst of bright seasonal colour, complementing the beauty of the gardens at this time of year, these new trees will also enrich and diversify the habitats available for the many invertebrates, mammals and birds that live here, forming part of our long-term commitment to biodiversity.
Being a part of the relocation of this garden, working closely with our friends at Sanderson to ensure the safe transport and arrival of the trees and hedging, has been an exciting, rewarding partnership – and we’re looking forward to sharing this meaningful gift with all visitors to the park, this autumn and in the months and years to follow.
