A fantastic £33,350 raised for our trees after Big Give campaign

We’ve been so moved by the incredible response to our Big Give ‘Tree Fund’ campaign, which ran from December 3rd up until yesterday (December 10th). Thanks to the support of some very generous pledgers, and our Big Give Champion, the Reed Foundation, all donations made during the campaign were matched, enabling us to double the amount we raised for our trees.

We saw our initial £15,000 target smashed on day one – and then a generous supporter promised to match an additional £10,000 of donations, meaning we eventually raised a fantastic total of £33,350 (including an additional £10,000 in match funding, plus gift aid) for our precious trees!

Thank you so much for sharing our love of trees,” says Head of Gardens Rosie Fyles. “After the stormy weekend we’ve just had, it’s incredibly encouraging to know that people understand the nurture and care trees require during unprecedented conditions. On behalf of everybody that works in the gardens, thank you.

Why we decided to raise money for our trees

Chiswick House & Gardens is home to over 1,600 trees, including some notable and beautiful veterans that contribute magnificently to the landscape. Taking care of them is key to the ongoing nurture of this 65-acre green oasis that means so much to so many people.

Our trees:

  • provide vital food, shelter and breeding space for a vast array of wildlife, including established populations of bats and hedgehogs, and are central to the biodiversity of the gardens and the surrounding area.
  • Lock up carbon dioxide and help keep our air clean. Many of the trees here have been doing that for over 200 years.
  • Cool the air when its hot, providing shade and shelter.
  • Are beautiful and good for us! Multiple studies have shown that spending time with trees reduces stress, improves mood and sharpens mental clarity.

Where will funds raised go?

  • The Tree Fund will directly support the work that ensures the long-term health and resilience of trees right across the gardens, including:
  • Annual tree survey keeping the trees safe as well as healthy
  • Managing the veteran trees for longevity, maintaining vital habitats for as long as possible.
  • Encouraging new growth and creating ideal environments by pollarding & pruning etc.
  • Planting trees predicted to thrive in future climate conditions, ensuring they can be enjoyed for generations to come.
